According to a recent Airbnb survey, more than nine in 10 active guests are considering traveling this summer, with most intending to travel.
Undoubtedly, many of those guests are considering the money they’ll spend on their trips – on gas, at restaurants, local shops, and on experiences in new places. However, many Airbnb Hosts in the US are turning that thinking on its head and considering what they could earn renting out their homes on Airbnb while they travel this summer.
Last summer in the US, nearly one in five Airbnb Hosts were also guests on the platform, earning over $1 billion between June 1 and August 31, 2021. Over last year’s Fourth of July, Hosts nationwide earned more than $410 million.

It’s clear: Many Hosts are looking toward their homes to both help pay for their vacations and even earn some extra money when they depart this summer. According to a recent survey, over 60 percent of Hosts who said they list their primary home said one of the occasions in which they rented to guests was while traveling on vacation1.
These aren’t just numbers, there are real people earning money while they’re away. We spoke to a few Airbnb Hosts who rent out their home while traveling. Here’s what they told us:
When asked why she hosts while traveling, Janet, who hosts Blissfully Wild in Idyllwild-Pine Cove, California, told us: “We are a family of four that travels to France for the summer every year to visit our family. While we are away, we are able to earn enough income to pay for the tickets, airport parking, dog care, and then some. These trips were a financial burden for years until we discovered your platform. Now we go and are so much more relaxed with the entire process and have enjoyed the income so much that we rent out the house once or twice a month now and use those weekends to make extra income while also paying for little obscure mini breaks.”
Adriana and Stephan, are both full-time photographers and split their time between Rio de Janeiro and California and host That Red Cabin in Oakhurst, California and 3B Modern APT in Rio de Janeiro. Adriana told us: “Without Airbnb, our houses would be our biggest expense, and because of Airbnb, our houses are our highest source of income while we’re on vacation. It’s pretty sweet!” She also elaborated that listing her property on Airbnb while she’s away has allowed her to spend more time with her family and friends in Rio and to live a life full of family connections, which wasn’t possible before.

- California – Host-guests last summer earned a total of approximately $175 million.
- Florida – Host-guests last summer earned a total of over $120 million.
- Texas – Host-guests last summer earned a total of approximately $75 million.
- New York – Host-guests last summer earned a total of over $60 million.
- Colorado – Host-guests last summer earned a total of approximately $45 million.
- North Carolina – Host-guests last summer earned a total of approximately $40 million.
- Georgia – Host-guests last summer earned a total of approximately $35 million.
- Tennessee – Host-guests last summer earned a total of approximately $30 million.
- Arizona – Host-guests last summer earned a total of over $26 million.
- Oregon – Host-guests last summer earned a total of over approximately $23 million.
