Singapore is a treasure trove for an adventure. First of all, the transportation system is insanely efficient. The Singapore MRT can take you almost anywhere in the city. As long there is a train station, you can never get lost, as the different MRT lines are interconnected. But enough about the fascination with the trains, and let’s talk about food.
Sure there are a lot of restaurants in Singapore. There are even Michelin star restaurants be in the Marina Bay Sands. But what we are after today is the hawker center food! These open air food courts are popular in Asia, particularly in Malaysia and Singapore. They offer various cuisine including Singaporean, Malaysian, Chinese, Indian, Malay and others.
Kaya Toast with Soft-Boiled Egg
Starting off with a traditional Singaporean breakfast. The Kaya Toast consists of toasted bread with kaya. Kaya is a sweet fragrant coconut and egg jam. The toast is additionally spread with a slice of butter. It usually comes with a soft-boiled egg and a hot drink. You can choose between coffee or milk tea. The milk tea is mixed with condense milk, giving it a creamier taste when compared to regular milk. While this might be too sweet for some, changing the milk tea with coffee offers a better contrast of taste with the toast. The soft-boiled egg can be flavored salty by including a dash of soy sauce and pepper. Try also dipping the Kaya toast in the egg, and you’re in for a treat.
From our partners:
Charsiew chicken or pork
A Chinese-style barbecued or roasted pork dish. The sweet and savory flavors of the meat can be augmented with chili sauce on the side. The meat is marinated beforehand in soy sauce, hoisine sauce, and other seasonings before being roasted or grilled. The stalls also gives out free soup, which is a good alternative instead of just drinking water. The cucumbers are there to reset your palette or you could use it wash the taste after the meal.
Rice, veggies, meat and sugar cane juice
There are different type of viands available in hawker center. A combination of rice with vegetables or meat. With a single service of rice, vegetable and meat, this would bring your meal to about less than 5 SGD. Which is enough for the average lunch to curb your hunger.
Another thing we recommend is to try their sugar cane juice. This is widely available in Singapore, and they would make it fresh after you made the order. You could even see them squeeze it through the machine press to extract the juice. The sweet taste with sufficient amount of ice is a refresher during the hot days.
Congee or rice porridge
Congee is a Chinese rice porridge that has a creamy and smooth consistency. It is perfect on rainy or cold weather. Congee is plain by itself, but can be ordered to include chicken, fish, pork and egg. But what levels up Congee is the accompanying Yau Char Kwai, a type of Chinese deep-fried dough stick. While this combination makes it a good breakfast substitute, it’s also popular as a snack.
Ice Kachang
It’s not complete till we have the desert. The Ice Kachang is like the kakigōri from Japan, American shaved ice, or halo-halo from the Philippines. The simplicity of the shaved ice makes it a big plus, as it is goes with any other syrup of your choice. This also comes with sweet beans to add a bit of texture to the dish. Another snack perfect for the hot weather after buying souvenirs and merch from the Eras Tour concert.
