Airbnb & Asheville Support Renters Ahead Of CDC Moratorium Expiration

In June, we announced – ahead of the expiration of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s national moratorium on residential evictions – that we would ban new US listings when a city notifies us that the listings are located at rental properties where the tenant has been evicted due to nonpayment of rent, and where the tenant had been protected by the CDC moratorium.

Today, Airbnb is proud to share that we are partnering with the City of Asheville, North Carolina to implement the COVID-19 Renter Protection Policy, as Asheville City officials hear from residents on the concern about rental evictions in their community. This collaboration builds on the City’s commitment to advancing partnerships that identify housing solutions in Asheville.

“We thank the City of Asheville for its proactive response to our COVID-19 Renter Protection Policy,” said Andrew Kalloch, Head of COVID-19 Housing Policy for Airbnb. “By partnering with Airbnb, City officials are supporting tenants at a time when many are still suffering the economic hardship of the pandemic and we’re proud to be part of the solution for the people of Asheville.”

As of June 15, upon receipt of eviction records from participating cities, Airbnb will remove any new listings where the tenant has been evicted due to nonpayment of rent, and where the tenant had been protected by the CDC moratorium. To support this initiative, Asheville City staff will regularly monitor records of residential evictions within the City and share those with Airbnb. The COVID-19 Renter Protection Policy will be active through the end of the year.

Together, Airbnb and the City of Asheville hope that continuing awareness of this initiative will discourage rental property owners from evicting renters who are behind on payments in order to advertise those properties as short-term rentals.

In addition to partnering with Airbnb on this initiative, the City is sharing additional resources for Asheville residents who need support to avoid eviction:
