Oppenheimer has made a new kind of record in just its second week at the box office.
While Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is, once again, at number one on the domestic box office chart, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer appears to be just as popular.
According to Universal, it’s the first R-rated film — Nolan’s first in more than 20 years — to gross more than $10 million for seven days in a row.

The report also claimed that the dark historical drama had a stellar outing over the weekend, taking a mighty $46.6 million for $174 million at the US box office, and it has now taken $400 million worldwide.
“Weekend two proves the outpouring of interest in Barbie and Oppenheimer a week ago was not a fluke,” Paul Dergarabedian, a senior Comscore analyst, told Variety.
He added: “Both films put up second-weekend numbers that would have been considered solid as debuts and reflect two of the best sophomore session holds in box office history.”
Cillian Murphy plays the titular J Robert Oppenheimer and is joined by an all-star cast, with Emily Blunt as Kitty Oppenheimer, Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock, Matt Damon as Leslie Groves and Robert Downey Jr as Lewis Strauss.
At the time of writing, Oppenheimer currently stands at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes from 289 reviews, tying it with Nolan’s best ever rating for The Dark Knight.

The Telegraph compared the movie to “witnessing history itself being split”, while Deadline hailed it as “the most important motion picture of 2023” and IGN said that it is “big, bold, and surprisingly intimate”.
Oppenheimer is out now in cinemas.
