Millena Brandao’s Parents Claim Hospital Negligence: Report

Millena Brandão’s parents have filed a police report for their daughter’s death, accusing two hospitals of negligence.

According to Brazilian outlet G1, Millena’s mother Thays Brandão and father Luiz Brandão, filed a police report on Saturday, May 3, one day after Millena died in the hospital.

Thays and Luiz spoke to the outlet sharing that they want the police to investigate Brazil’s municipal Emergency Care Unit (UPA), both hospitals and their respective medical teams for alleged negligence during the care provided to Millena.

“For now, we are respecting the family’s mourning. We are already planning the next steps. Before making any decision, we are reviewing all the facts and gathering all the documents. This week I will meet with the family to discuss everything that happened,” said the parents’ lawyer Antonio Carlos Toninho said in a statement to G1. “In any case, I would like to point out that everything will be done according to the family’s wishes.”

Brazil’s Public Security Secretariat (SSP) told the outlet that an investigation is underway.

“The case is being investigated by the 101st Police District (Jardim Imbuias), which opened a police inquiry to determine the circumstances of the incident, registered as a suspicious death,” the SSP said in a statement on Tuesday, May 6. “Expert reports were requested and are in progress for analysis by the police authorities.”

Millena, who was best known for her role in Netflix’s Sintonia, died after a series of hospital visits for an unknown illness. According to her parents, Millena visited the Pedreira General Hospital and the Maria Antonieta UPA before her death. They claimed that neither facility could give them a clear diagnosis.

“The doctors still haven’t said what really happened to my daughter and what killed her,” Thays said to G1. “We don’t know what killed her.”

According to a death certificate obtained by G1, the paperwork stated that Millena’s death needs “to be clarified” and “complementary tests” were required.

Thays and Luiz publicly announced on Sunday, May 4, that Millena died. She was 11 years old.
