Does Ellie Kill Abby in ‘The Last of Us’? The Character’s Fate Revealed

The Last of Us season 2 is in full swing and the theme is revenge — especially after the second episode aired on April 20.

Spoilers from The Last of Us series and video game below.

Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) is dead, so where do we go from here? A question multiple Us Weekly staffers have been asking, by the way. Thankfully, Neil Druckman’s The Last of Us Part II video game has the answers — maybe.

The Last of Us TV show viewers are aware that series cocreators Druckman and Craig Mazin have taken some creative liberties with the adaptation. So, it’s unclear exactly where the story will go from here, but major plot points have stayed true to the game.

When it comes to Abby’s fate — well, she doesn’t die at the end.

Ellie is on her quest for revenge following Joel’s death, heading to Seattle and going after Abby and her crew. For the first half of the video game, Ellie is the protagonist with players following her journey. However, there’s an eventual switch to follow Abby’s story.

Many gamers have stated to TV show viewers — through articles and Reddit — that there will be a sense of empathy for Abby as the story continues. (Although, right now it might be hard to feel that way.)

“This story is about how we all deal with those moments, which do confront us in life,” Mazin said in an interview with Max when detailing Joel’s death scene. “We all think, ‘I could deal with this much stuff.’ And then life says, ‘Ah.’ And then we find out what we can put up with.”

So, what happens to Abby in the end? It seems there are a lot of characters that have not been introduced yet — on the show — that help tell the rest of Abby’s story. That backstory aside, Ellie and Abby do have a confrontation in the end.

In the game, Ellie lets Abby go and returns to Jackson. Haunted by a dead Joel, Ellie thinks she made a mistake and again sets out for revenge. Before nearly drowning Abby to death, Ellie lets her go a second time.

The second game is rumored to be split up in multiple parts in order for the HBO series to expand for three — possibly four seasons.

The network announced on April 9 that there would be a third season of the series.

“We approached season 2 with the goal of creating something we could be proud of,” Mazin said in a statement. “The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew.”

He concluded: “We look forward to continuing the story of The Last of Us with Season 3!”

New episodes of The Last of Us premiere on HBO Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.
