Rory McIlroy has made headlines through the years for his golf skills — and the ups and downs surrounding his romantic life.
McIlroy’s first public relationship was with longtime love Holly Sweeney, whom he dated for six years before splitting in 2011. That same year, McIlroy sparked a romance with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. McIlory got down on one knee and proposed to Wozniacki in 2013, but called off their engagement via a phone call months later.
“The problem is mine,” McIlroy said in a May 2014 statement. “The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails. I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had.”

McIlory went on to pursue a romance with Erica Stoll, whom he wed in 2017. The pair went on to welcome daughter Poppy in 2020. Four years later, Us Weekly confirmed that McIlroy filed for divorce from Stoll. He dismissed the filing in June 2024.

Holly Sweeney
The golfer and Sweeney dated for six years before breaking up in 2011.
“I never thought he would do this to me,” Sweeney told the Irish Sunday Mirror in December 2011 of their split. “I always suspected he had a thing for her. He’s always been a big fan of tennis. When he was watching the women’s games he always said he fancied her but I didn’t take it that seriously — little did I know.”
She continued, “It was Rory that ran away with Caroline — not the other way around — so I guess I blame Rory, or both of them if I’m totally honest. … Obviously we’d separated before, but that wasn’t for any other reason than that we thought we were too young to be in such a serious relationship. This was a different thing altogether.”
Caroline Wozniacki
McIlroy confirmed he was dating Wozniacki in August 2011, per the Telegram. In December 2013, he popped the question. Months later, McIlory called off their engagement shortly after the pair sent out their wedding invitations.
“It is quite a difficult time for Caroline and myself, and the statement really said it all this morning,” McIlroy said per ESPN at the BMW PGA Championship. “It was mutual, and we both thought it was the best for us, the best for both of us. Time to move on, and I’ve said all that I need to say.”
Erica Stoll
McIlroy and Stoll first crossed paths at the Ryder Cup in 2012. The pair began dating after his split from Wozniacki in 2014.
“I am very happy in my love life. … The past six or seven months have been really nice. That part of my life is going great,” he gushed to the Times of London in May 2015.
McIlroy proposed to Stoll in December 2015, with the couple tying the knot in April 2017. They welcomed daughter Poppy three years later.
In May 2024, Us confirmed that McIlroy filed for divorce after seven years of marriage. He dismissed the filing the next month.
“Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together,” McIlroy said in a statement to The Guardian. “Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”
