Sisters Liv and Mia Tyler didn’t meet — or even know they were sisters — until crossing paths at an Aerosmith show to watch their father, Steven Tyler, perform.
“We didn’t meet until around, like, 8 and 10, but we grew up the same way without knowing each other,” Mia, 46, shared during the Monday, April 14, episode of the “Sibling Revelry” podcast. “I grew up in New Hampshire and she grew up in Maine. The same year we both were moved to New York City by our moms.”
Steven shares Liv, 47, with Bebe Buell and welcomed Mia with late ex-wife Cyrinda Foxe. The women were born 18 months apart and eventually met at an Aerosmith and Guns N’ Roses show. There were “no [other] kids backstage,” so Mia and Liv formed a quick bond with each other.
From our partners:
“We were at this VIP area, like, outside of the green rooms,” Mia recalled. “This fan lady came up and she was like, ‘Oh, my God, you girls are so cute. Are you guys sisters?’ I was like, ‘Yeah.’ We pretended we were sisters.”
Liv Tyler Details Todd Rundgren’s Pain in Learning Steven Tyler Was Her Dad
While Mia was pretending, Liv was actually told “before that show” that they were half-sisters. Both women got “emotional” while recalling the moment on the podcast.

“I just remembered standing there, watching [Guns N’ Roses] play, looking and seeing this girl who looked exactly like me. We literally had the same outfit on,” Liv said. “I looked at my mom. … She just started crying. My mom just, like, bawled.”
Buell, now 71, was forced to tell Liv the entire story — which is “complicated” all around.
Buell had “a love affair” with Steven amid her relationship with Todd Rundgren. According to Liv, her mom left Rundgren but “got scared” when she saw more of Steven’s lifestyle.
“I think as the story goes, she called Todd and said she was pregnant,” Liv explained. “He asked her to come home to where they lived in Woodstock in upstate New York. Basically, he very courageously and lovingly said, ‘This child needs a father, and I will be the father.’”

Liv continued, “This is where it all gets a little bit confusing because I think there was sort of an agreement that maybe I would never know [about Steven] or maybe I would have to be 18. Then that was broken.”

After Steven went to rehab in 1986, he called Buell to “make amends” and met up at Rundgren’s show in Boston.
“I met Steven that night,” she continued. “Throughout the course of that year, he was around more. I had no idea who he was other than I just thought he was fabulous.”
