Professional bull rider Dylan Grant has died after sustaining injuries at a rodeo event in Wharton, Texas. He was 24.
Grant died on Thursday, April 3, hours after performing at the Wharton County Youth Fair Xtreme Bulls event, according to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA).
“The PRCA would like to send its thoughts and prayers to bull rider Dylan Grant’s family, friends and the entire rodeo/bull riding community after Grant passed away after suffering injuries Thursday night,” the PRCA wrote in a Friday, April 4, statement. “Grant sustained an injury in the second round at the Wharton County event after being bucked off by a bull in the arena.”

According to the PRCA, Grant was immediately transported to the Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center Houston after being thrown off the animal.

Grant obtained his PRCA permit in May 2018, nearly six years before purchasing his PRCA card. He had competed in multiple PRORODEO and Xtreme Bulls events throughout his career. Grant previously was a member of the University of Wyoming rodeo team before his graduation in 2023. With the squad, Grant even won the Mountain States Circuit Finals Rodeo in 2021.
The team also issued a statement following Grant’s passing.
“The University of Wyoming Rodeo Team is heartbroken in learning of the passing of former student-athlete Dylan Grant, who tragically lost his life in a bull riding accident in Texas,” a Friday statement read. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Dylan’s father, Wade, and Dylan’s mother, Tiffany, during this unthinkable time.”

The Instagram post continued, “Dylan was a proud 2023 graduate, earning his degree in Physical Education Teacher Education. Dylan was a champion of life inside and outside of the arena. Once a Cowboy, Always a Cowboy.”
Other members of the rodeo community have also shared their condolences.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the passing of Dylan Grant, a talented bull rider from Pavillion, Wyoming who lost his life competing Thursday night at the Wharton County Youth Fair’s PRCA Xtreme Bulls event in Texas,” Sean Gleason, the CEO of the PBR, wrote in a statement. “Dylan was blessed as an athlete – a state champion from Jackson Hole High School and a proud University of Wyoming alumnus – but more than that, he was known for his kindness, compassion and big heart. His spirit touched everyone who knew him.”
Gleason concluded, “Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and everyone who had the honor of knowing Dylan.”
