Katie Thurston Details ‘Mentality’ Going Into Stage 4 Cancer Treatment

Katie Thurston is offering a candid glimpse at her new reality as she battles stage 4 breast cancer.

“Lymph nodes, breast and liver biopsies,” Thurston, 34, wrote via her Instagram Stories on Sunday, March 30, sharing a topless selfie of her various ports and insertion sites.

Thurston went on to share an important message with her followers about her “mentality” going into her cancer treatment.

“Let’s make one thing clear. I will die WITH cancer before I die FROM Cancer,” she stressed. “And that mentality I’ll be holding onto.”

Katie Thurston Reveals How She Discovered Breast Cancer ‘Myself’

Thurston, who was the Bachelorette lead for season 17 of the hit reality dating show, was diagnosed with breast cancer in February. A PET scan the next month revealed additional spots on her liver were also cancerous. She is scheduled to begin treatment next month.

“My treatment is spaced out at six treatments to start, three weeks apart,” Thurston explained during an Instagram Story Q&A on Friday, March 28. “A treatment is essentially a dedicated day to travel/infusions/recovery.”

Thurston further revealed that her oncologist’s plan to treat tumors in her liver and breast “the same.”

“The cancer that is within the liver is from the breast cancer spreading vs a new type of cancer,” Thurston said. “So, in basic terms, my great cancer is the root and will be the focus. [I’ll have] six rounds of chemo to start.”

Thurston also married comedian Jeff Arcuri on March 22 before her treatment cycle.

“It was so sweet. Obviously, we were wanting to plan a wedding and there’s a lot of emotions that come in with chemo and the impact and the health and we don’t know what the next year looks like,” Thurston exclusively told Us Weekly earlier this month. “And one night he said, ‘I want to show you that I still love you and that I’m here to stay. I’ll get married to you tomorrow.’ We flew our parents in from Michigan and Washington State. We got our marriage license and a friend is just gonna marry us.”

It was also important for Arcuri to get married before Thurston started chemotherapy.

“I want to be able to be in the hospital with her and just be like, ‘My wife’s in there.’ There’s more power to that,” Arcuri told Us. “I don’t want to be not with you for any of this.”

After Thurston completes her rounds of chemotherapy, she also expects to undergo surgeries, including a double mastectomy.
