Awkward! Michael Caine revealed he was interrupted by costar Mia Farrow’s ex-husband André Previn while filming a sex scene for 1986’s Hannah and Her Sisters.
“I remember one embarrassing moment when I was doing a love scene in bed with Mia — and I look up and there’s her ex-husband, André Previn,” Caine, 92, recalls in his new memoir Don’t Look Back, You’ll Trip Over, released on Tuesday, March 25. “I thought, bloody hell this is going to be tricky.”
The late Previn was visiting the set when the uncomfortable moment happened.
From our partners:
Farrow, 80, was married to the pianist and composer from 1970 to 1979, following her brief two-year marriage to Frank Sinatra in the 1960s. By the time Farrow was making Hannah and Her Sisters, she was in a long-term relationship with the film’s director, Woody Allen. This meant Previn walked in on Farrow’s then-boyfriend, Allen, filming her in a sex scene with another world-famous movie star, Caine.
LOL! Ronan Farrow Jokes About Frank Sinatra Baby Daddy Story
According to Entertainment Weekly, Caine writes that he was initially nervous that Previn’s appearance would impact the atmosphere on the Hannah and Her Sisters set. However, Caine insists that “it was fine” in the end and he was able to carry on shooting the scene with Farrow without much distraction.
Caine won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in Hannah and Her Sisters, but infamously wasn’t able to accept in person because he was working on the notorious box office bomb, Jaws: The Revenge.

The legendary actor remembered that period in his life in his previous autobiography, 1992’s What’s It All About?, as “the time when [he] won an Oscar, paid for a house and had a great holiday.”
In a new surprising revelation, Caine takes credit for setting up Farrow and Allen, now 89, in his 2025 memoir. The English actor and his wife, Shakira Baksh, would frequently run into the director at Allen’s favorite New York bar and restaurant Elaine’s – and they were once joined by Farrow for a night out.
“In New York one evening, [Farrow] said to me, ‘Do you know Woody Allen?’” he writes. “I said, ‘Yes, as a matter of fact, we do know him. Not very well, but he’s often in Elaine’s. He always seems to come in around the same time in the evening as we’re there.’ So she said, ‘Well, if you’re ever there and you see Woody Allen at another table, invite me along to dinner.’ And so I did. Which is how they really met.”
Caine later noticed that “Woody and Mia didn’t get on so well” by the time they were making Hannah and Her Sisters in 1985.
“You could see the tensions, even then,” he acknowledges. “But I was obviously focused on the part. I was never close enough to them to know that it was all going to end so horribly. Very sad.”
Woody Allen Is ‘Willing’ to Reconnect With Dylan and Ronan Farrow
Farrow and Allen were in a relationship for 12 years and made 13 movies together before the Rosemary’s Baby actress discovered he had an affair with her 21-year-old adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn.
Allen and Farrow’s 1992 split sparked a huge scandal, as she accused the filmmaker of abusing their adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow. Allen has always strenuously denied those allegations.
The 2021 Emmy-nominated HBO documentary series Allen v. Farrow examined the situation in interviews with Farrow, daughter Dylan, now 39, and son Ronan Farrow. Dylan recounted her accusations of being sexually abused at age 7 by her father during his custody battle with Farrow.
Allen later told CBS News at that time that “nothing that [he] ever did with Dylan in [his] life could be misconstrued” as sexual abuse.

“I never was accused of anything in my life. [Then] I’m suddenly going to drive up in the middle of a contentious custody fight at Mia’s country home [with] a 7-year-old girl. It just — on the surface, I didn’t think it required any investigation, even,” Allen insisted.
Allen has been married to Soon-Yi since 1997, and they share two daughters — 26-year-old Bechet and 25-year-old Manzie.
