Ben Stiller is sharing a rare glimpse into how he reconciled with wife Christine Taylor after a years-long separation.
“I didn’t expect we were going to get back together, but when we broke up, there was a part of me that wasn’t ready to just give up on it,” Stiller, 59, shared with The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Wednesday, February 5. “Probably a certain amount of that is having watched my parents. And I love Christine, I love my family, and I was not ready to just go, ‘OK, enough of this.’”
After 17 years of marriage, the couple — who share Ella, 22, and Quinlin, 19 — separated in 2017. During the coronavirus pandemic, however, both Stiller and Taylor, 53, decided to reunite in their New York home with their children. After a period of months, they decided against divorce.

“Sometimes I have to be pulled from [work],” Stiller explained about balancing work life and home life. “I also really love hanging out with my family and Christine and having fun together. So I’m happy that I didn’t totally miss the boat on that.”

In his candid interview with THR, Stiller also opened up about his late parents, comedy legends Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. During their 60-year marriage, the couple sometimes fought over the role their careers played in their lives.
According to Stiller — who has appeared in Zoolander, Dodgeball and Tropic Thunder with his wife — he began to replicate some of his parents’ dynamic when it came to his relationship with his career.
“My dad was committed to turning their relationship into something that they could make a living doing a comedy act about and my mom didn’t really love that as much, but she was really good at it, and that affected their relationship,” he shared. “You start making movies, and if they don’t go well, that would affect me.”

Through the ups and downs of balancing his personal and professional life, Stiller is excited to hear his kids want to be actors in the future.
While he acknowledges it’s a “tough business,” he has vowed to support them “a hundred percent.”
As a protective parent, you don’t want your kids to have to suffer the slings and arrows,” he shared. “I’m glad that for all of the things that I did wrong as a parent or being too caught up in my work, it’s not like they were like, ‘I don’t want anything to do with this.’”
