Imagine yourself in a refugee’s shoes? What would you do and how much will you sacrifice to protect your loved ones?
If there was no government or law enforcement to protect you and your family? If there are bombs dropping out of the sky into your neighborhood? You find family and friends are injured or dead. Or if there are armed militants roaming the streets? Or if food was not available? Or there are threats to kidnap your son or your daughter? What would you do? What if this was happening to your family?
Luma Mufleh, a Jordanian immigrant and Muslim of Syrian descent who founded the first accredited school for refugees in the United States. Mufleh shares stories of hope and resilience, explaining how she’s helping young people from war-torn countries navigate the difficult process of building new homes.
From our partners:
Luma Mufleh said: “It dumbfounds me how the word “refugee” is considered something to be dirty, something to be ashamed of. They have nothing to be ashamed of.”
We have seen advances in every aspect of our lives — except our humanity. There are 65.3 million people who have been forced out of their homes because of war — the largest number in history. We are the ones who should be ashamed.
She also quoted “.. when you find yourself choosing between home and survival, the question “Where are you from?” becomes very loaded.”
Few people choose to be thrust into such extreme situations. You might try staying for a while because this is home. But when everything around you has failed, you make that decision to flee. You gather what you can carry, grab family members if any and you run for safety. Just imagine giving up everything, your home, your business, just so you can stay alive.
So, what do you do? First, you stand up and become a voice like Luma Mufleh.
A great quote inspiration from Martin Luther King Jr.:
• The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
• Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
• Be loud with your beliefs and take action. If you belong to a church or civic organization, lead a drive to sponsor a family, even if it is from afar.
