Louis 200, An Artistic Adventure To Celebrate The Bicentennial Of Louis Vuitton’s Birthday

To mark the bicentennial of the birth if its founder Louis Vuitton – born on August 4, 1821 – the storied Maison has unveiled Louis 200, a multifaceted event to celebrate his exceptional life – adventurer, entrepreneur, designer and innovator – as well as his rich legacy. The exciting agenda includes Louis: The Game, Louis 200 and a documentary entitled Looking For Louis. Beyond the homage, these entertaining alternative formats are an invitation to explore the history of the Maison from a contemporary perspective.

Looking For Louis is an exclusive documentary that retraces the story of Louis Vuitton from his humble beginnings to international renown. At the age of just 14, young Louis decided to leave his natal village in France’s Jura region, setting off on foot for Paris. After a two-year journey he became an apprentice to renowned trunkmaker Romain Maréchal before founding his own Maison in 1854 near the prestigious Place Vendôme in Paris. With an intuition that luggage would assume growing importance thanks to the revolution in transport, Louis Vuitton developed a waterproof coated canvas and redesigned trunks with flat tops, setting the stage for an amazing success story.

The Maison drew inspiration from this initiatory journey to develop a platform game, Louis: The Game. Fusing advanced animation with two centuries of heritage, the game challenges participants to embark on an adventure through six imaginary worlds. Guiding the Louis Vuitton mascot Vivienne, players explore the enthralling world and visionary spirit of Louis Vuitton. On her journey to a festive birthday destination, Vivienne must collect as many Monogram candles as possible in addition to keys to access successive levels. Each candle unlocks a postcard that reveals an anecdote – collaborations, special orders, technical trivia, family history, artistic initiatives, runway highlights and more. Players can also collect fashion accessories and seek out one of the 30 NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens).

As part of the Louis 200 festivities, the Maison is showcasing 200 exclusive display windows created by 200 exceptional talents. The iconic trunk invented by Louis Vuitton in the 1850s has been rethought as a blank canvas to welcome 200 interpretations. The 200 contributors were given carte blanche to redesign the object, create interactions and spark dialogue, freely choosing their medium and techniques. And because a birthday celebration as prestigious as this would not be complete without a gift, Louis Vuitton has pledged to donate 10,000 euros in the name of each of the 200 visionaries to one of 15 non-profit organizations, making a total donation of two million euros. Selected for their emphasis on enabling young people and people from disadvantaged communities to discover the arts and creativity, these associations span myriad dimensions of creativity across 13 countries on five continents. The Louis 200 endeavor thus forges bonds between the avant-garde trunkmaker and contemporary artists, a salute to creative genius that bridges generations and continents.
