More Films, With Love, From Brazil To The World

Movies are the tool that I found to bring love into people’s lives and I have been working on this for more than 15 years. During this time, I have never seen the importance of my profession as deeply as in this current moment. The master Charles Chaplin once said that “a day without laughter is a day wasted” – and note that the artist had the difficult mission of making people laugh during The Great Depression.

I believe that entertainment is one of the most effective ways of dealing with adversity. A message that really shaped my career is from Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, who said that comedy has the power to block negative feelings, such as anguish, frustration, fear, pain or anger – even if only for a few seconds. I learned a lot watching comedies. Watching great movie stars since my childhood, such as Chico Anísio, Jô Soares, Costinha, Agildo Ribeiro, Jorge Dória and Jerry Lewis.

I now have this spot on the Netflix blog to give thanks for the opportunities I have been receiving to continue bringing love to millions of people around the world through Brazilian movies. I’m very proud to have received the news that Just Another Christmas is in the TOP 3 most watched titles by Brazilian Netflix subscribers over the last 10 years. It’s a national film, it’s mine, it’s yours, it’s ours.

And it was this success that opened the gates for more new productions that I share here firsthand with you, dear readers: I will be back with the film Vizinhos, in partnership with fantastic friends Roberto Santucci (direction) and Paulo Cursino (script). Maurício Manfrini and Júlia Rabello will also be part of this brilliant cast. The film tells the story of Walter, a very stressed out guy who collapses one day. Based on medical advice he leaves his city seeking quiet in a small town, surrounded by peace and nature. But the peaceful plans fail because of a very perky neighbor.

Netflix is really committed to bringing a good laugh in the Brazilian way and has more local productions coming up: one of the main releases is Casamento a Distância, a film that raises doubts about love and trust on the eve of marriage. Silvio Guindane debuts as director and the cast brings together Dandara Mariana, Lellê, Gabz, Yuri Marçal, Roberta Rodrigues, Margareth Menezes and Rafael Infante.

But entertainment is not just about comedy. Another new feature is Carga Máxima (Overhaul), the first Brazilian action film from Netflix that brings a lot of speed, chases and explosions on the streets. This new feature counts on a high production value and promises to be one of the biggest projects of the Brazilian film industry.

I end this post happy to note that our talented Brazilian audiovisual productions are flying higher and higher, receiving recognition around the world and positively impacting so many people’s lives. For you who got here, I recorded an audio post speaking about each one of these new productions coming soon. I hope to make you laugh and make your day better!

A loving hug,
Leandro Hassum
