La Liga 2025/26 - Every Club Rated and What to Expect This Season

La Liga enters 2025/26 with its competitive landscape subtly but significantly shifted. Real Madrid remain the dominant force by most metrics, but Barcelona under their reconstituted squad are genuine challengers. Atlético Madrid are formidable in their eternal, grinding way. And beyond the traditional three, a cluster of clubs — Villarreal, Athletic Club, and a resurgent Real Sociedad — are capable of a top-four finish on their best days.

Below is a full pre-season assessment of all twenty clubs, rated across three dimensions: squad quality, attacking threat, and the realism of their stated ambitions.

Title Contenders

Real Madrid remain the benchmark. Their Champions League pedigree and ability to recruit generationally significant players when required — combined with the infrastructure, financial power, and institutional confidence of the biggest club in the world — makes them the starting favourite. Their squad depth across the key positions is superior to any rival.

Barcelona's recovery from financial crisis has been remarkable if messy. The LaLiga financial fair play rules they navigated with their 'economic levers' remain a source of controversy, but the playing squad — with a generation of exceptional youth products now reaching full maturity — is legitimately world-class. If they remain injury-free and Hansi Flick's system beds in fully, they are Madrid's closest rival.

Atlético Madrid will finish in the top three. They always finish in the top three. Diego Simeone's tactical discipline and squad-building philosophy — high pressing, defensive structure, explosive transitions — remains one of the most consistent frameworks in European football. They may lack the individual brilliance of their two rivals but they are extraordinarily hard to beat.

La Liga's top three have finished as the top three in nine of the last ten seasons. The question is always which order — and how close the challengers can get.

European Hopefuls

Athletic Club continue their remarkable commitment to the Basque-only player policy and continue, improbably, to be competitive as a result. Their connection between club and community is unlike anything else in professional football, and their supporters are among the most passionate in Spain.

Villarreal, the 'Yellow Submarine', operate brilliantly on limited resources with excellent coaching and smart recruitment. Real Sociedad have the best football structure in the Basque Country and a consistent ability to develop and then sell talent while remaining competitive.

Real Betis under Manuel Pellegrini play genuinely attractive football and have a fanbase — the Béticos — whose passion for their club and their city is matched by very few in Spain. They have Europa League aspirations and the squad to back them up.

The Mid-Table

Sevilla, historically one of Spain's great clubs and four-time Europa League winners, are in a difficult transitional period. The departure of sporting director Monchi was followed by inconsistency in recruitment and performance. They remain capable of a good season but their time as automatic top-four contenders feels like recent history.

Valencia are an ongoing cautionary tale about what happens when a successful club is taken over by ownership with no football vision. The fans have been extraordinarily patient through years of mismanagement. The squad has quality that should justify a comfortable mid-table finish but the structural problems are deep.

Getafe, Celta Vigo, Rayo Vallecano, and Osasuna are the quintessential La Liga mid-table clubs: defensively organised, difficult to beat at home, inconsistent away, and capable of an occasional stunning result against the big clubs.

Relegation Battle

Three clubs will be relegated. The identity of those clubs changes every season — La Liga has a reliably unpredictable relegation battle, partly because promoted clubs from the Segunda División vary widely in their readiness for top-flight football.

The newly promoted sides — whichever three clubs came up — face the hardest first season. Spanish football punishes physically and technically inferior squads mercilessly. The established sides most vulnerable to a difficult campaign are typically those with ownership instability, a manager in his first season, or heavy summer recruitment yet to gel.

Key Players to Watch

Vinicius Jr continues to be the most electrifying player in the league on his best days. Jude Bellingham has adapted to Spanish football with a fluency and maturity that surprises even his admirers. For Barcelona, Lamine Yamal — still a teenager but already playing with the confidence of someone who has been in this environment for years — may be the most gifted young player in European football.

In the wider league: the striker battle between established names and the new generation of Spanish forwards is a compelling narrative thread. Spanish football has historically produced extraordinary attacking midfielders; it is now producing world-class centre-forwards.

Our Season Prediction

  • Champions: Real Madrid

  • 2nd: Barcelona

  • 3rd: Atlético Madrid

  • 4th (Champions League play-off): Athletic Club

  • Europa League: Villarreal, Real Betis, Real Sociedad

  • Relegated: Three newly promoted clubs or recent arrivals with structural instability

La Liga's greatest gift to football fans is that it almost always delivers. The technical quality is high, the tactical variety is greater than in any other major European league, and the grounds — particularly the atmospheric ones in the Basque Country and Andalucía — are an education in what football support can look like at its most committed.

The 2025/26 season will not disappoint.
