The entire network is managed by the Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid (CRTM) and uses a single integrated ticketing system. One card — the Tarjeta Multi — works on all of it.
2026 subsidy update: The Spanish government has maintained heavily subsidised transport through 2026. The Abono Joven (youth pass, under 26) remains an extraordinary €8/month for all zones. Monthly passes for Zone A adults are approximately €20–22/month. These are among the best transport deals in Europe.
Cards and Tickets — What You Actually Need
The Tarjeta Multi is Madrid's reusable transport card. It costs €2.50 and is valid for 10 years. Almost all ticket types are loaded onto it. Buy one at any metro station vending machine the moment you arrive. Cash is not accepted on any EMT city bus — you must have a card.

The Zone System
Madrid's transport network is divided into concentric zones. Zone A covers the City of Madrid — everything you need as a resident in the city. Zones B1, B2, B3 extend to outer municipalities and suburbs. Zones C and beyond reach regional towns.
For most expats living and working in central Madrid, Zone A is all you need. If you live in a suburb outside the M-40 or M-50 ring road, check which zone your area falls in before buying a monthly pass.
The Metro
Madrid's metro runs 13 lines serving over 300 stations, operating daily from 6:00 AM to 1:30 AM. During peak hours (8:00–9:30 AM and 6:00–8:00 PM), trains run every 2–4 minutes. After 1:30 AM, the metro closes and night buses (Búho network) take over.

Line 1 (Blue) — Pinar de Chamartín to Valdecarros North-south through the city centre, connecting Atocha station and Sol. One of the busiest and most useful for daily use.

Line 2 (Red) — Las Rosas to Cuatro Caminos Connects the Retiro park area, the Opera area, and useful transfer points.

Line 6 (Grey) — Circular ring line The circular line encircling the city. Excellent for transfers between other lines without going through the centre. Nuevos Ministerios, Moncloa, Méndez Álvaro.

Line 8 (Pink) — Nuevos Ministerios to Airport (T4) Your connection to Barajas airport. Serves T1-T2-T3 and T4. Requires the €3 airport supplement on non-tourist-pass tickets.

Line 10 (Dark Blue) — Puerta del Sur to Hospital Infanta Sofía Runs the length of the Paseo de la Castellana, serving the business district, Santiago Bernabéu, and Chamartín.
The airport supplement (suplemento aeropuerto): Taking the metro to/from the airport requires paying an additional €3 supplement on top of your normal fare. This applies to single tickets and the 10-trip MetroBús. It does NOT apply if you have a monthly pass or a Tourist Pass. Total metro cost from the airport with a single ticket is approximately €5.
Buses — City and Night
The EMT (Empresa Municipal de Transportes) operates over 2,000 blue city buses across Madrid. The MetroBús 10-trip ticket works on both metro and buses — allowing transfers within 60 minutes between metro and bus.
No cash on buses — contactless bank card, Tarjeta Multi, or mobile payment only. At 1:30 AM when the metro closes, the Búho (owl) night buses take over from Plaza de Cibeles and Avenida de América, running from 1:30 AM to 6:00 AM approximately every 30–60 minutes.
Cercanías (Commuter Trains)
Renfe's Cercanías trains serve the greater Madrid region, connecting central stations (Atocha, Chamartín, Nuevos Ministerios) to towns up to 60km away. They are faster than the metro for crossing the city.
In 2026, the Spanish government has maintained the free Cercanías pass for registered commuters using Renfe trains more than 16 times per month. Register via Renfe's website to access this benefit if you commute regularly.
Getting to/from Barajas Airport
Metro Line 8
Nuevos Ministerios → T1/T2/T3 and T4. 15–20 minutes. Runs 6:00 AM – 1:30 AM. Cost: ~€5 (fare + €3 airport supplement).
Airport Express Bus (Line 203)
Atocha ↔ Airport, 24 hours a day including overnight. Journey ~35–40 min. Cost: €5 — no airport supplement.
Cercanías C-1/C-10
Only serves T4. Fast (~25 min to Atocha). Cheapest option at ~€2.60.
Taxi (flat rate)
Flat rate of €33 to/from the M-30 ring road (city centre). 24/7. No negotiation needed.
Monthly Pass for Residents (Abono de Transportes)
If you live in Madrid permanently, the monthly abono is the most cost-effective option. For Zone A (all of central Madrid), the adult monthly pass in 2026 is approximately €20–22/month. To get a personal abono, you apply with your ID/NIE and a photo at metro station offices or via the CRTM website. The card is personalised — it has your name and photo and is non-transferable.

Practical Tips and Things Guidebooks Miss
Stand right on escalators
Madrid has strict escalator etiquette: stand on the right, walk on the left. This is universally observed. Blocking the left side will earn you pointed looks and sometimes direct requests to move.
Dogs on the metro
Dogs are allowed on the Madrid metro but with conditions: one dog per passenger, muzzled and on a lead, and they must travel in the last carriage only. No dogs on escalators — use the lift.
The metro closes at 1:30 AM sharp
No exceptions. After 1:30 AM, use the Búho night buses, Uber, Cabify, taxis, or walk. Plan your night out around this if you are using public transport home.
FAQ
Can I use my contactless bank card directly on the metro?
Yes — since 2023, the Madrid metro and EMT buses accept contactless bank cards and mobile payments. However, for regular use the Tarjeta Multi is more economical (€7.30 for 10 trips (2026 subsidised rate) vs ~€2+ per single tap). Tourist passes are only available on Tarjeta Multi, not on bank cards.
Is the Tourist Pass worth it?
If you are making 4+ trips per day and want the simplicity of unlimited travel (including the airport), yes. For lighter use, the 10-trip MetroBús at €7.30 (2026 subsidised rate) is almost certainly better value. Do the maths based on your planned trips before buying.
Can I use my Tarjeta Multi in other Spanish cities?
No — the Tarjeta Multi and Madrid-loaded passes only work within the Madrid regional transport network. Other cities (Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao) have their own separate cards and systems.
