The CCSE Exam for Citizenship
The Conocimientos Constitucionales y Socioculturales de España (CCSE) test is the constitutional and sociocultural knowledge exam required for Spanish nationality. It is prepared and administered by the Instituto Cervantes and checks your understanding of Spanish government, law, culture, history and daily society.
The Overview
Who needs it, and why
If you are applying for Spanish nationality by residency, you must pass two assessments: a DELE A2 language exam and the CCSE test. The CCSE confirms that you understand how Spain is governed and how Spanish society works day to day.
You do not need a university degree or any prior qualification to sit it. You simply register for one of the scheduled sittings through the Instituto Cervantes, take the exam, and receive your certificate, which you then include with your nationality application.
The pass certificate is valid for a limited period, so it pays to time the exam close to when you plan to submit your nationality documents. We help you choose the right sitting and map a study plan around your application timeline.

All questions are closed response: multiple choice (three options, one correct) and true or false. The exam is sat in person, in a single sitting of 45 minutes.

For Beginners
Tips to get started
Begin with the official CCSE guide from Instituto Cervantes; it lists every topic the exam can cover.
All 25 questions are drawn from a public bank of around 300, so past papers and mock exams are your best preparation tool.
Manage the clock carefully: 45 minutes for 25 questions is roughly under two minutes each, so do not get stuck.
Strengthen the larger section first. Government, law and citizenship is 60% of the marks, so it carries your pass.
Prepare it alongside your DELE A2. Both are required for citizenship and share vocabulary, so study them together.
Book a sitting early. Exam dates are limited and the certificate must be valid at the moment you apply for nationality.
