In Only Murders in the Building, Selena Gomez‘s character, Mabel Mora, is known for her signature high-low aesthetic.
Her first appearance in season 5 was captured by paparazzi on Thursday, April 10, in New York City while filming with costars Steve Martin and Martin Short, who play Charles-Haden Savage and Oliver Putnam, respectively.
Gomez, 32, was styled by Emmy Award nominee Dana Covarrubias, the lead costume designer for the series since its inception in 2022.

The outfit consisted of a dark brown A.L.C. blazer ($795), a Veronica Beard gingham vest ($548) and an Alice + Olivia caramel leather pleated miniskirt ($250) paired with sheer patterned Sheertex tights. (The latter are key to Mabel’s character, as Covarrubias has said they’re rip-proof.)
She topped it off with a sleek trench coat and Mabel’s trademark gold hoop earrings. Then, she grounded the look with a pair of croc-embossed boots with a pointed toe and a stylish yet sensible block heel — ideal for solving murders on the go, naturally.
As Covarrubias previously told Us, since Mabel lives in her aunt’s luxurious apartment, she “has access to her [aunt’s] closet,” but she didn’t have a job until (spoiler alert) Mabel and her neighbors’ true-crime podcast was made into a television series of its own.
The costume designer added that “we can’t have her wearing too high-end things,” which explains the pitch-perfect aspirational meets accessible mix seen in the first photos.
Covarrubias also told Us that Mabel’s color inspiration comes from Gomez’s red-carpet looks; however, the singer’s personal style couldn’t be more “different” from her onscreen character.
“I just take the color element, but I’m not putting her in these very glamorous things that she wears in her red carpet life,” the costume designer said at the time.
Still, the costumes are also quite practical. They’re influenced by the reality of living in New York City, hence Mabel’s mix of cold-weather-friendly layers in her latest blend of warm neutral hues.
The premiere date for season 5 of Only Murders in the Building has yet to be announced.
