What New Titles Do The British Royals Have, Now That Charles III Is King?

King Charles III succeeded the British throne after the peaceful passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8th, 2022. He is now the head of the monarchy, a symbol of national unity and pride, with all of the responsibilities of the Crown resting upon him. With his new position, a shift has occurred within the family, with new lines of succession below him. Let’s look at who has become what now that Charles III has become King.

Camilla, Queen Consort

Per the wishes of Queen Elizabeth II on the eve of the 70th anniversary of her reign, Camilla has become Queen Consort. Her duties consist of providing companionship and support to the King. While she will not technically be a queen, she will get her own crown.

William, Prince of Wales

William inherits his father’s Dukedoms of Cornwall and Cambridge and, as first in line to the throne, has become Prince of Wales, as announced by his father, the King, during his first address to the public on September 9th. The primary duty in his new role is to support the King.

Catherine is now the first public Princess of Wales since her beloved and late mother-in-law Princess Diana. The Queen Consort Camilla technically held this title but did not adopt it publically due to its association with the late Princess.

Prince George of Wales

Prince George had been the Prince of Cambridge since his birth, but with his father’s appointment, he is now officially Prince George of Wales. He is now second in line to the throne at nine years old.

Princess Charlotte of Wales

Princess Charlotte has also had a change in name. She will now be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Wales. She will as well change places, now third in line to the throne.

And the youngest of the Wales’ children, at four years old, is Prince Louis of Wales. By far the most entertaining, keeping audiences always on their toes, and now fourth in line to the throne.

Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex

Harry, son of King Charles III, and his wife Meghan stepped away from royal duties in 2020. Part of their exit involved ending the usage of their Royal Highness Prince and Princess titles, although they are still referred to as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Harry is now fifth in line to the throne.

With King Charles III’s accession, the possibility of adopting royal titles for their children, the grandchildren of the now sovereign, would follow royal protocol set in 1917 by King George V. It will remain to be seen whether Harry and Meghan’s children will become His Royal Highness Prince Archie of Sussex and Her Royal Highness Princess Lilibet of Sussex, who are now sixth and seventh in line to the throne.

Prince Andrew, the Duke of York

After passing through King Charles III’s family, the line of succession would then pass to the second son of Queen Elizabeth II, and his descendants, therefore placing Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, as eighth in line to the throne.

Princess Beatrice of York

Prince Andrew’s oldest daughter Beatrice would then hold the ninth place in line to the throne. While she doesn’t hold any titles, she uses the surname York officially. The recent birth of her daughter, Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, with her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, places Sienna tenth in line to the throne.

Princess Eugenie of York

With Beatrice having only one child, the succession would then pass to her sister, Prince Andrew’s youngest daughter, Princess Eugenie of York. She would take the eleventh place in line to the throne. Her son, with husband Jack Brooksbank, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, born February 2021, would follow in line as twelfth to the throne.

Edward, The Earl of Wessex

The line of succession would then pass to Prince Edward, the third son of Queen Elizabeth II, and his family. Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex and Viscount Severn, would be thirteenth in line to the throne.

James, Viscount Severn

James, born in 2007, is the youngest child of Prince Edward and his wife Sophie Rhys-Jones, who married in 1999. He becomes fourteenth in line to the throne.

Lady Louise

Lady Louise, James’ older sister by four years, is actually lower in the line than her younger brother. She was born in 2003 before a law was passed eliminating a male succeeding a female in the line of succession. She is now fifteenth in line to the throne.

The Princess Royal

The Princess Royal, a title given to Princess Anne in 1987 and the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, now takes her turn in the royal line of succession to the throne at number sixteen. Now that the line has passed through the three male heirs, it shall pass through the female heir.

Peter Phillips

Peter Phillips is the oldest grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and the oldest child of the Princess Royal. He does not have any royal title being the child of the Princess, a female line. He is now the seventeenth in line to the throne.

Peter Phillips has two children, Savannah and Isla, with wife Autumn Phillips. They will now be eighteenth and nineteenth in line to the throne.

Zara Tindall
