Behind the scenes of the sustainably focused broadcast revolution at Formula 1

Back in the summer of 2020, when the world stood still whilst dealing with the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic, Formula 1 took the opportunity to fast-track its remote operations programme that not only helped beam F1 into millions of fans’ homes around the world but revolutionise the broadcasting industry.

The programme, which featured as a key part of F1’s pledge to become Net-Zero Carbon by 2030, should’ve taken the sport’s technicians and engineers two years to complete, but instead was accelerated into operation within two months. Whilst F1 continues to reach new areas of the world on the track, the innovative remote operations programme has allowed travelling freight to be reduced by 34%, and travelling staff to be reduced by 37%, off it.

Ahead of the 2021 FIA Formula One World Championship, Dean Locke, Director of Broadcast & Media at Formula 1, provides insight and expertise of the process that goes on behind the scenes at Formula 1’s Media & Technology Centre in the UK where over 50 operators, over 400 screens and thousands of computers, will bring fans live action throughout the upcoming season.
